Week 5: Get Ready For Easter

April 25, 2009

Week 5 of Get Ready For Easter

“It is Finished!” Those were the last words of Jesus as He hung on the cross. A man named Joseph went to Pilate after Jesus had died, and asked him if he could take Jesus’ body and bury Him. Pilate agreed. Joseph took the body of Jesus and put Him in his tomb, which was carved out of a very large rock, kind of like a cave. Then Joseph rolled a large rock in front of the tomb to seal it up. At the demand of the Jewish leaders, Pilate posted guards around Jesus’ tomb. These soldiers were there when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. As they got closer to the tomb, they felt the earth shake as an angel rolled back the stone and sat on it. The angel’s appearance was so bright that the guards fell unconscious. The angel told the women, “Do not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus but He is not here. He has risen, just as He said.” The angel sent the women to tell this good news to all the others, including the disciples. Mary Magdalene went back to the empty tomb and began to cry. She heard someone say her name. As she looked up, she saw it was Jesus. She was so excited. She ran to find the disciples. Jesus really was alive! (Source: Matthew 27:57-66 & 28:1-7, John 20:11, 14-18)

Jesus is alive! He overcame death. Even though He suffered and was put to death, God had the final victory because Jesus rose from the dead on the third day! There is no better news than this. No one else has ever done anything like this or ever will.

Because of what happened on the cross, I can now have eternal life. I can live forever with God in heaven. I can have His strength with me now on earth. When I have God in my life, He helps me each day. I don’t have to be afraid of anything. He also has a special plan and purpose for my life. This is worth sharing with my friends and family. I want them to have the same excitement and same eternity that I have.

I can tell others about the good news of Easter. I can invite friends to come to church so they can hear about Jesus too. My life can tell others about Jesus by the way I talk and act. When I make good choices and help others, I am showing them what is important in my life. This week I can tell one friend about what Jesus means to me and why I celebrate Easter.

Thought…

April 18, 2009

This is taken from Week 4 of Get Read For Easter I thought I would share this with everyone…

Jesus was 100% God and He was 100% man, except He never sinned. He is the only way for us to get to heaven. When Jesus died on the cross, He took upon Himself the sins of the world and paid the price so that anyone who believes in Him can live forever in heaven.

When you understand why Jesus chose to die on the cross, you are one step closer to believing in Him. You can see how much God loved each one of us when He sent His son Jesus to die for us. He let His own Son endure pain, suffering and even death on a cross so we could all have a personal relationship with Him. All you have to do is believe with faith and accept His gift of Salvation.

Do I believe in heaven? Do I believe that there is life after people die? Or is this just a made up story about a man dying? Well, let me tell you, Jesus is real. When I understand who He is and what He did on the cross, I have something awesome to believe in. I have hope for the future. I have purpose for my life. I don’t need to do anything to earn my way to God or into heaven. All I have to do is believe.

Believing in Jesus is really pretty simple, but it requires faith. I need to understand that God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for all the wrong things I do. When I tell God that I am sorry for all my sins and that I believe in Jesus and want Him to come into my heart, He will. I don’t need to be perfect. I don’t need to do certain deeds to get to heaven. I can talk to Him anytime. I can go to church to learn more about Jesus. I can read my Bible every day to learn more about Jesus. The more I learn about Jesus, the better my relationship with Him will be. This week, if I haven’t already asked Jesus to be the boss of my life, I will take the steps necessary to find out more about what it means to believe in Jesus so I will have a place in heaven with Him.

Get Ready for Easter: Week One

March 30, 2009

Hey Parents,

We have just begun our new teaching series, “Get Ready For Easter.” I will post every week the Family EnterAction info for that week. Family EnterAction Guide is designed to help you reinforce with your children what is being taught each week during the weekend services.

Each week is full of fun ideas and activities you can do as a family. The memory verse will be posted and it is what we are learning for the week.

We pray as your children learn more about how to “Get Ready For Easter,” they will “Enter into Action” and will begin to apply what they are learning in their daily life!

Get Ready For Easter
Week One

Word of the week – Worship
Memory Verse – “Bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” John 12:13 NIV

Day One: What Should I See?
Grab a Bible and look up this week’s Bible story in Matthew 21:1-11. Choose someone to be the narrator of the story. Then act out the story using the following characters: Jesus, the donkey, and then people in the crowd. (If you would like to make it more fun, dress up the characters first.) Have the crowd say, “Hosanna. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Have someone ask the question, “Who is this?” And someone in the crowd says, “It’s Jesus from Nazareth.”

Day Two: What’s the Key?
At meal time this week talk about this together. The key to this story is that Jesus was recognized and treated like a King. A large crowd of people gathered and worshipped Jesus by waving palm branches and laying the coats on the ground in front of Jesus. In those days, that was how people treated a king. Many of the people in the audience had seen Jesus perform miracles and heal people in need, so they honored and worshipped Him. Talk about how our society treats movie stars and rock stars today. Imagine if Jesus were alive on earth today. How would you like to see Him honored? (Roll out the red carpet, see Him on the front of a magazine, have an award show just for Him, etc.)

Day Three: What’s That to Me? (One 3 x 5 card needed.)
As we get ready for Easter this year, take some time to think about how you would answer the question, “Who is Jesus to me?” Write the question on a 3 x 5 card and pass it around the table, giving everyone a chance to share their answers. Then go back around the table a second time to play a memory game. This time they must repeat what everyone else said. For example: Dad said that Jesus is his Boss. Mom said that Jesus is her Savior. Cameron said that Jesus is his Healer. etc.)

Day Four: How Should I Be?
We have learned this week that Jesus is worthy of our worship and praise. There are many ways we can worship Jesus. One way is to sing praise songs to Him. The next time you are all in the car together, put a worship CD in and sing praises to Him as a family. When we take the time to praise Him, we are giving Him the honor He deserves.

Day Five: Live-It!
It’s time to live out what you learned this week! Here’s another way to worship Jesus! Write out a prayer to God thanking Him for three or more things that He has done for you. Here’s a few to get you started: He made a way for you to go to Heaven by dying on the cross for your sins. He gave you a family. He has blessed you with a place to live, food to eat and toys to play with. Younger children can draw a picture of the things they are thankful for. Then pray out load together as a family, thanking Him for all He has done for you.
